Earlier this year,  worrying new figures regarding blue badge theft and misuse in London were published, following an enquiry by Unmesh Desai,  the London Assembly Labour lead on Policing and Crime.

The figures showed that the number of Blue Badge thefts in London has more than quadrupled in the last decade,  and while 1,230 of the badges were stolen in the capital in 2014, the number has risen almost every year since then to hit 6,415 in 2023. Worryingly, this figure does not include stolen badges already in circulation, misused badges, or fake badges that are being sold online.

On top of the approximately 15,000 stolen badges in circulation in London we are now also seeing a worrying spike in the use of fake badges. Yesterday our founder Paul Slowey was honoured to meet with Unmesh Desai, to start to plan ways to protect London’s disabled motorists. The two badges displayed in this picture are just a couple of examples of the thousands of fakes that are being used on London’s streets.

As a Community Interest Company, BBFI – The National Agency for Blue Badge Fraud Investigations has a team of experienced investigators, including ex or retired police officers who partner with local authorities to investigate and prosecute those that are misusing Blue Badges. Being on the ground and providing support on a local level is just one of the practical ways we help local authorities drive down incidences of Blue Badge misuse. We are also instrumental in gathering evidence for badge prosecution cases.

BBFI is working tirelessly to tackle Blue Badge crime. Local authorities find partnering with us helps them reduce Blue Badge fraud. If you’re a local authority looking for help in this area, get in touch.  Contact us to find out how we can help to enforce the Blue Badge scheme in your local area to increase compliance and improve safety for local people.
