We’re delighted to announce that we have recently partnered with the London Borough of Southwark council to tackle blue badge fraud in this authority. Southwark is a vibrant and busy central London borough and demand for parking is very high.
We strongly believe that we can change behaviour and increase compliance by forming this highly effective partnership.
BBFI was formed to bridge the gap between mobility, parking, and corporate fraud teams. The work that BBFI do in partnership with local authorities has resulted in an increase in prosecutions across the country from less than 200 in 2008 to over 1,200 last year.
All of our investigators have at least 30 years-experience and in their first day of working with the Southwark team, they uncovered a stolen badge, meaning that the car was towed away, the person responsible had to pay £280 to get their car back, and could face prosecution for using the stolen badge.
Misuse and a lack of enforcement of the high-profile blue badge scheme undermine credibility in the scheme and increase division and discrimination in society.
Public feeling against the misuse of blue badges can be strong, and it’s important to see that the team at the London Borough of Southwark take this criminal activity seriously and want to eradicate it from their area.
There has never been a better time as statistics show an increase in blue badge misuse and it’s essential that local authorities are demonstrably seen to support disabled vehicle users and uphold their rights.
We work in partnership with one in three London local authorities and prepare in the region of 800 blue badge prosecution cases a year and whilst we have a wealth of experience in different authorities, the challenges and resources needed in each location are different.
When starting any new partnership, we understand the value of spending time with the enforcement team and truly understanding how we can assist and make a difference. We look forward to supporting the Southwark team to change behaviour and increase compliance.
